Coating technologies for aeronautics

Airbus 380 are the only airplanes with double deck to its full length. For such a construction series of components are to be customized and for this purpose Graco equipment has been chosen for the painting part.

The huge wings of the plane (around 80 m each) need special treatment. In cooperation with PPG Aerospace, a special type of paint has been created for ensuring high resistance under extreme weather conditions and a high quality of the finish in the same time.

Due to the fact that the paint has to be applied while avoiding the contact between the operators and the wings of the plane, Graco developed a portable system based on the airless air assisted paint spraying technology, while combining the Merkur pump with the PROXS4 AA spraying gun.

The surface to be covered is 845 square meters. Therefore 50 l of paint are needed for processing each wing in part. For creating the most appropriate mix, Graco’s ProBatch electronic distribution system has been used.

The painted wings are afterwards transferred to Toulouse, where the airplane is entirely assembled. From there the Airbus 380 is further transferred to Hamburg, for finishing works.  These are done while using the PRO XS 3 spraying guns, able to ensure a high quality level of the coverage.

All products used in the aeronautic industry have to comply with the highest quality and resistance standards. Therefore GRACO was considered the appropriate choice for all painting operations.
